John O'Shea Returns to Republic of Ireland Setup as Assistant Coach

Former Player Joins Hallgrímsson's Backroom Team

FAI Confirms Appointment of O'Shea

John O'Shea has been appointed as assistant coach to Heimir Hallgrímsson in the Republic of Ireland men's national team setup.

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, with O'Shea set to return to the team he represented 118 times during his playing career.

Hallgrímsson, who took over as head coach in December 2022, described O'Shea's appointment as a "priority." He said, "John has a wealth of experience in the game, both as a player and as a coach, and he is someone I know and trust."

O'Shea, who previously worked as assistant manager at Reading, expressed his excitement about the opportunity to work with the national team again.

"I am delighted to be back involved with the Ireland setup," he said. "I know Heimir well from our time together at Reading, and I believe in his vision for the team."

O'Shea's appointment marks a significant step in Hallgrímsson's rebuilding of the Republic of Ireland team following their disappointing FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign.

The pair will now focus on preparing the team for their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures in June, with Ireland set to face Scotland, Armenia, and Ukraine.
