National Park Service Announces Closure of Popular Alaskan Park
Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve to Temporarily Close
Closure to Begin on August 25th Due to Safety Concerns
Juneau, Alaska - The National Park Service (NPS) announced today that Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve will be temporarily closed to visitors beginning on August 25th, 2023. The closure is necessary due to ongoing safety concerns related to glacial ice calving and other hazards.
In recent weeks, there have been several large calving events at the park's glaciers, including a major calving event at the Margerie Glacier on August 10th. These events have created unstable ice conditions and increased the risk of ice falling into the water, posing a significant hazard to visitors.
